The Green Building Advantage program was developed to equip minority professionals, entrepreneurs, and leaders within LA County’s real estate and community development sectors with the technical expertise and resources necessary to thrive as Los Angeles transitions to clean energy.

Taught by real estate and renewable industry experts, this advanced educational program is specifically designed for those individuals whose work significantly shapes South LA’s multifamily built environment.

The 15-week curriculum is both comprehensive and practical. It aims to provide multifamily property owners and developers with a thorough understanding of the best renewable energy practices and financing strategies, while also providing them access to valuable industry connections and organizations that can help support their professional development and successful transition into LA’s emerging Green Economy.

Through lectures, panel discussions, case studies, and team projects, Green Building Advantage participants gain valuable insights on how to implement such solutions as installing rooftop solar panels, battery backups, and monetizing EV charging stations on underutilized parking lots.

Upon completion of the program, Green Building Advantage graduates will be well-equipped with the educational awareness, practical skills, and industry network needed for a successful transition, as well as empowered with the tools and redevelopment strategies on how to use solar power in a more strategic and environmentally impactful manner.

The ideal candidates for the Green Building Advantage’s pilot program comprise of a collaborative and inclusive group of twenty (20) minority real estate and community development professionals who not only want to gain more insight into the renewable energy sector, but also those whose careers and businesses will play a vital role in South LA’s successful transition into a Green Economy.

During the pilot years, participants will be able to enjoy COMPLIMENTARY ADMISSION into the Green Building Advantage program, ensuring that the cost of admission is not a barrier to accessing its comprehensive curriculum and industry resources.

As a result, potential candidates will be required to complete an online application and undergo an in-person interview conducted by a panel of MREP CA Board Executives and renewable energy experts.

Alongside possessing a relevant professional background, Green Building Advantage candidates will also be chosen based on their genuine desire to advance their businesses, real estate assets, and/or career goals into the Green Economy.

Therefore, participants will also be selected based on their ability and demonstrated commitment to attend all classes, as well as have the desire, financial capability, and operations to successfully implement a renewable energy project, initiative, program, professional service, and/or obtain a small business procurement or workforce development contract.

However, if a student misses more than two (2) classes, they automatically forfeit their status in the program and will be ineligible from receiving the array of graduation benefits upon completion of the fifteen (15) weeks.

15-Week Program Schedule

Hosted twice a year during the fall and winter months one night a week from 6:00pm to 9:00pm, Green Building Advantage’s comprehensive curriculum has been crafted to educate participants on how to make informed and fiscally sound decisions regarding the implementation of renewable energy solutions.

The 15-week schedule covers key topics in the renewable energy sector, while equipping individuals with best practices, key strategies, and case study project profiles.

By bringing together this diverse range of professionals, MREP aims to successfully graduate and foster an emerging network of minority real estate and community development leaders dedicated to helping advance LA County’s successful renewable energy transition.

Therefore, upon completion of the program, graduates of the Green Building Advantage program can look forward to earning a range of valuable and tangible benefits offered to help expand their knowledge, skills, and access within LA County’s renewable energy industry. These graduation benefits include:

Strategic Networking and Collaborations:

The Green Building Advantage program is not only designed to enhance participants’ knowledge-base and technical skills, but it also acts as a launching pad for the multifamily renewable energy projects by offering financing opportunities through MREP’s strategic alliance with The Alectriq Company.

Strategic Networking and Collaborations:

MREP will host and facilitate several networking opportunities throughout the year- fostering collaborations with industry professionals, peers, and experts within the renewable energy and real estate sectors.

One-Year Membership:

Graduates will be granted a one-year paid membership into the following business organizations who have been identified as having existing renewable energy initiatives, programs and/or resources for LA County professionals, entrepreneurs, and small business owners: the Urban Land Institute, Los Angeles (ULI-LA), and the American Association of Blacks in Energy (AABE).

Admission to the “Annual RE+ Conference:”

An industry standard, Green Building Advantage grads will also gain complimentary access to the “Annual RE+ Conference.” Customarily held in the fall, this premier event will provide graduates with a unique opportunity to expand their professional network, as well as immerse themselves in the latest developments and trends in the national renewable energy landscape.

MREP Graduating Membership Lapel Pin:

As a symbol of accomplishment, Green Building Advantage graduates will receive a distinctive MREP CA Lapel Pin upon completing the program recognizing their commitment to their renewable energy education and support of MREP’s statewide “Urban Green Movement.”
